CCHCI Pediatric Center of Excellence

The 15th Street School in Douglas was built in 1905, and after many years educating the children of Douglas and undergoing two major renovations, the site was abandoned. The Chiricahua Community Health Centers (CCHCI) acquired the site from the school district and retained BWS Architects to determine whether the existing 9,930 square foot building could be renovated for use as a pediatric clinic.

Our evaluation of the building revealed that neglect had taken its toll on the interior, although the basic structural fabric was salvageable. After meeting with the medical staff and administrators of the existing pediatric clinic, we developed a building program that identified all of the exam rooms, offices, and support facilities required for the new clinic. We then developed an approach that addressed the functional requirements, respected the historic building character and integrated "green building" strategies for reuse of the building as an energy efficient, healthy and environmentally responsible clinic.
